It was an emotional moment for singer-composer Raju Singh, when he planned a surprise for director
Hansal Mehta, who has been his friend for almost two decades now, with a cake to celebrate his birthday.
The surprise and the cutting of the cake happened when Hansal and Rajkummar Rao came for the background score recording of the film ‘Citylights’ to Raju Singh’s Juhu studio. “Two nights ago, I was invited to a party to celebrate the National Award for ‘Shahid’. I reach there and realise it is Hansal’s birthday party. Cake-cutting tohbantatha! But I generally tend to shy away from celebrations myself. So I surprised him with a cake-cutting at home. More than me, it was my wife Sherly’s idea and Hansal being an old friend, it meant a lot to all of us,” said Raju Singh.
Hansal was touched with the gesture and said, “A background score means a lot to any film. A bad one can spoil it and a good one lends more strength to the scene. I can easily rely on Raju as I know what magic he can do to a film.”
Rajkummar was very happy to be a part of the celebrations as he has had a close association with the director Hansal Mehta as well. “We have worked hard on the film. I love it when Hansal involves me in every aspect. As an actor, there is a lot of learning to do. And of course, the perks are that once in a while, you get some amazing cake to sample,” grinned Rao.
Raju Singh has been there and has been doing background scores for a long time but interestingly besides composing music he even has lent his voice to some of the songs which have been chartbusters in the recent times. Among these are ‘Rooh mein…’ which has been picturised on the late Farooq Sheikh for the film ‘Club 60’ and ‘Zabaan jale hai…’ for Naseeruddin Shah for ‘Dedh Ishqiya’.
